A bungee jumper took the plunge using a rope made out of condoms - which luckily worked without splitting or snapping.

Veteran jumper Carl Dionisio said he created the unusual 30-metre rope to recreate "the virgin buzz" of his very first bungee.

But he admitted that he was in a state of panic leading up to the jump, fearing the latex rope might let him down.

Portuguese-born Carl carried out the jump in his adopted home city of Durban in South Africa, 15 years after his first bungee.

He said he and friend Michael "Sniper" Xaba soent four months making the rope out of 18,500 condoms.

Carl, 37, said: "It was difficult as the condoms are slippery. When we tied knots they would just slip out.

"Latex is latex. But the cord was based on a mathematical formula and although I was 99 per cent sure that it would work, my stomach was in a knot for a month before the jump."

Finding original and unintended uses for condoms has spread throughout countries such as Thailand and India. A Thai model shows off condoms arranged in an orchid design.

Oceanographic scientists say they have discovered a vast, floating "reef" of the world's disposed condoms in the middle of the South Pacific, about halfway between Tahiti and Antarctica. The phenomenal mass is almost two miles long, an eighth of a mile wide, and in places up to 60 feet deep, the oceanographers say.

Mason Froule, Australian marine biologist at his country's Oceanographic Laboratory Outpost on Macquarie Island, South Pacific, said the bizarre accumulation is explained by a scientific term called "like aggregation"-- that is, the massing of similar objects over short or longer periods of time due to wind or ocean currents, magnetic fields, buoyancy and other conditions.
